When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, he not only changed the world but also lent his name to a town that has become synonymous with innovation and transformation. Fast forward almost fifteen decades, and the name Edison still resonates, particularly within the Indian-American community.
Once a modest enclave where Indian immigrants established small businesses and grocery stores, Edison, New Jersey, has blossomed into a bustling hub, reflecting the vibrant and diverse culture of its residents. Today, Edison is celebrated in Pallavi Sharma Dixit’s novel, aptly named “Edison.”
Pallavi, an Indian-American who grew up in Edison, beautifully captures the essence of this community in her book. She shares how her experiences and relationships within this melting pot of Indian culture inspired her writing. Her protagonist, Prem, is a reflection of her own dreams and fantasies, deeply rooted in the cultural milieu of Edison.
On June 18th, Pallavi launched her book at Barnes & Noble in Menlo Park Mall, an event attended by friends, press, and local dignitaries. Mayor Sam Joshi, a key figure in Edison’s development, praised Pallavi’s work and expressed his eagerness to read her novel. The event also featured remarks from Charles Kim, Co-Founder and President of Third State Books, the publishing company behind “Edison.”
Pallavi’s warmth and enthusiasm shone through as she discussed her inspirations and hopes for a potential movie adaptation. The evening was a celebration not just of a book, but of a community’s journey from humble beginnings to cultural prominence. Attendees, including local business owner Satish Mehtani, whose restaurant Moghul is mentioned in the book, enjoyed engaging with Pallavi during the book signing.
“Edison” stands as a testament to the town’s transformation and the indomitable spirit of its people. Pallavi Sharma Dixit’s novel is a tribute to the place that shaped her, a story that resonates with anyone who understands the importance of community and heritage.
